Description
- Presquile National Wildlife Refuge provides prime wetland habitat for wintering Canada geese, wood ducks, black ducks and mallards. Although Presquile is small in size, average flocks of 3,000 Canada geese and 1,000 ducks use the refuge each year. Small concentrations of wintering snow geese use the refuge farmland on an infrequent basis.Wood ducks frequently nest along the banks of the two refuge creeks and in the interior of the island. The old growth timber found in this area provides excellent wood duck nesting habitat. Bald eagles, the only threatened species found on the refuge, roost in small numbers in trees along the farm field and the river. White-tail deer are easily observed feeding in the refuge farm fields just before sunset. The careful observer may occasionally see some of the more secretive mammals such as the fox, muskrat, beaver, opossum and eastern grey squirrel.
Recreation - This area is close to the metropolitan area of Petersburg, Virginia. Petersburg is steeped in history offering Petersburg National Battlefield. There is a very interested historic district in Petersburg, south of the James River. North of the James River, the visitor can tour wonderful antebellum plantations along historic Rt. 5. Climate - Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The eastern portion of the state has winter temperatures averaging above 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The eastern portion of Virginia generally experiences temperatures above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable. Location -
Presquile National Wildlife Refuge is located south of Richmond and north of Petersburg along the James River. The easiest way to reach the Refuge is via historic Rt. 5 heading south out of Richmond.
