General Information

Description - The Stevens Point area's locally operated 24-mile nature trail circles through river shores, trees, plants, wild birds, and animals. Recall the history of the huge pinery, Native American camps, pioneer settlements, and lore of the Wisconsin and Plover rivers. Green Circle is a joint effort between several municipalities and the citizens of Portage County. The trail follows a wooded route crossing several streams and rivers.

Attractions - Green Circle Trail affords a variety of users to experience a pathway circling the Stevens Point Area. A combination of surfaces range from crushed granite to pavement. Traveling through a primarily shaded setting dotted by streambeds, the trail gives the essence of being farther from civilization than in truth. The well-maintained trail twists and turns continually offering an interesting route. Wildlife typically seen along the trail include numerous white-tailed deer and a bounty of bird life.

There are many points of access including the scenic areas of the Wisconsin River, Plover River and Lake Jonas. Spur trails provide a remote experience, especially around the North East Loop. However, the spurs are unmarked. The easiest access is via Iverson Park in Stevens Point. It is located several blocks west of Hwys. 51 / 39 on Hwy. 10.

The 2.0-mile University Trail, a segment of the Schmeeckle Reserve trail network, connects to the Green Circle Trail.

Maps of the Green Circle Trail are found in the lobby of Stevens Point Parks and Recreation Center at 2442 Sims Avenue. The lobby is open Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Recreation - Recreation along the state trail includes hiking, tour bicycling, and cross-country skiing.

Climate - Northeast Wisconsin has four distinct seasons with warm summers and long winters. Great Lakes Michigan and Superior tend to make summers cooler and winters milder close to shore. January's average temperature is in the teens F (-teens C). Average July temperature is 68-70 degrees F (20 degrees C). During summer, temperatures can climb to above 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) for a several day stretch. The area's average yearly precipitation ranges from 30-32". Annual snowfalls in the Northeast Region have a wide range; the southern areas may receive 50" while the northern areas may receive in excess of 180". Nighttime summer temperatures can dip below freezing. Dressing in layers is a good way to remain comfortable in Wisconsin.

Location - Green Circle Trail runs the circumference of the Stevens Point area.
