Description - Merrick State Park encompasses 320 acres along the craggy and diverse Mississippi River landscape. The park rests between stately 500-foot sandstone bluffs and America's mighty river. This watery bottomland is characterized by sloughs, backwaters, and slackens. Nature lovers find endless enjoyment paddling, wildlife watching and hunting. Stealth visitors may see egrets, herons, muskrats and otters. As much as one quarter of the majestic park may be covered by water during the wet spring season.

The park's inception began as a gift of 266 acres from John A. Latsch who requested the park bear the name of Merrick on behalf of the famed river historian George Byron Merrick. In 1932 the land was dedicated as Merrick State Park.

Attractions - The very scenic Merrick State Park boasts a variety of park recreations including a north and south campground featuring electric hookup, showers, waterfront sites with boat mooring and walk-in sites. Firewood is for sale during the warmer months. Camping reservations are available online or by calling a toll-free reservation number. Contact information is listed below.

Three miles of hiking trails course through majestic terrain. These ungroomed trails are available in winter for cross-country skiing. One of the trails may be found behind the park's nature center. The shelter-style center is where visitors learn about the Mississippi River's natural and commercial history. See displays of butterflies, fossils, and wildlife mounts. Nature programs are typically held during the weekends and holidays. Entertainment-style programs are held as well.

Boating is a popular recreation at Merrick State Park. Two ramps give access to anglers, boaters and canoeists. Canoes may be rented from the park office. The larger of the two launches offers a picnic shelter and mooring dock. Picnic areas of the park may be found at the log shelter, boat ramps and campground areas.

Adjoining the park is Whitman Dam State Wildlife Area where hunters enjoy waterfowl and deer hunting.

Recreation - Merrick State Park maintains recreational facilities for boating, fishing, canoeing, hiking, waterskiing, swimming, and camping.

Climate - Southwest Wisconsin has four distinct seasons with warm summers and long winters. January's average temperature is above 16 degrees F (-9 degrees C). Annual snowfalls in the Southwest Region can range from 20 - 40". Dressing in layers is a good way to remain comfortable in Wisconsin.

Location - The park may be found hugging the Mississippi River shoreline several miles north of Fountain City on W-35.
