General Information

Description - Pecatonica State Trail is located in rural Southwest Wisconsin in the picturesque Bonner Branch Valley area offering views of farmland, woods, and open spaces. The trail twists and turns as it follows the scenic Bonner Branch. Comprised of a crushed limestone surface the trail accommodates riders and hikers of all ages.

Attractions - The Pecatonica State Trail is open for hiking, tour biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Trail passes are required for bikers, skiers, and equestrians 16 years of age and older. Access is from County Hwy. G. The trail links Belmont with Calamine and the 47-mile Cheese Country Trail. Cheese Country Trail explores farmland, prairies, and small communities. ATVs and horseback riders are welcome on the Cheese Country Trail. Call 608-776-4830 for details.

Camping is available approximately 10 miles east of Pecatonica State Trail at Yellowstone Lake State Park. Campers find two campgrounds containing 128 sites of which 108 are reservable through Wisconsin State Park's central reservation system. Thirty-eight sites offer electric hookup. The east side is open all year and has 36 campsites, while the west side is open from May to October and has 93 campsites. In addition to the family sites, there are six reservable groups sites, four with electricity. A new flush toilet and shower building, completed in 2002, provides campers with excellent accommodations. Yellowstone Lake is popular for hiking, fishing, and other water sports. The park adjoins the Yellowstone Lake State Wildlife Area.

Recreation - Pecatonica State Trail is open for hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

Climate - Southwest Wisconsin has four distinct seasons with warm summers and long winters. January's average temperature is above 16 degrees F (-9 degrees C). Average July temperature is 85 degrees F (29 degrees C). During summer, temperatures can climb to above 90 degrees F (32 degrees C). The area's average yearly precipitation ranges from 32-34". Annual snowfalls in the Southwest Region can range from 20 - 40". Dressing in layers is a good way to remain comfortable in Wisconsin.

Location - Pecatonica State Trail runs between Calamine and Belmont.
