Description
- Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, located north of Chattahoochee National Forest , honors the Civil War soldiers that fought for control of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1863. Chickamauga was considered the last major Confederate victory, but it was a hollow victory as control of Chattanooga was ultimately gained by the Federals two months later. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park features both Chickamauga Visitor Center and Point Park Visitor Center, Ochs Museum, trails at Chickamauga Battlefield and Lookout Mountain, and walking and car caravan tours are offered along with living history rifle and signaling demonstrations. The Cravens House is open seasonally. Lodging and camping facilities are not available in the National Military Park, with the exception of ten primitive campsites reserved exclusively for Boy/Girl Scout activities. A variety of hotels, motels, and RV camping sites are available nearby in the greater Chattanooga area. Restaurants and grocery stores are also available throughout the greater Chattanooga area. Other Concessions, NPS Managed Visitor Facilities, and opportunities include: Bookstores at Chickamauga Battlefield and Point Park Visitor Centers are managed by Eastern National. Wheelchairs are available for use at Chickamauga and Point Park Visitor Centers. On-site video tapes are also available to view non-accessible areas of the park. TDD (Telephone Device for the Deaf) is available for calls at the Chickamauga Visitor Center.
Recreation - This region of significant U.S. military history has been set aside as a memorial to the individuals who fought to preserve the United States Government. Although once sites of violence, today the battlefields in the National Parks System provide bucolic landscapes for reflection and recreation such as hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Visitor and information centers within this park are located at Chickamauga Battlefield and at Point Park on Lookout Mountain. These sites include interpretive exhibits and multimedia displays describing the Civil War battles within the region. Climate - The climate in northern Georgia is generally temperate. Short, cool winters give relief from hot summers. Most visitors enjoy this area during long, mild fall and spring seasons. Location -
The park consists of over 8,200 acres spread over the Georgia/Tennessee border. Located north of Chattahoochee National Forest the site can be accessed from State Highway 2. The closest communities are Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Chickamauga Visitor Center is located off of U.S. Highway 27 in Fort Oglethorpe, GA. Point Park Visitor Center is located on East Brow Road
