Description
- This lake in the upstate region of Georgia and South Carolina has a reputation as an excellent location for many types of outdoor recreation activities. Several South Carolina and Georgia State Parks as well as several regional and county parks adjoin the lake. Hartwell Lake is one of the Southeast's largest and most popular public recreation lakes. It was built by the Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 as part of a flood control and hydropower project. Hartwell Lake is one of the top 3 most visited Corps lakes in the nation, serving about 10 million visitors annually. The area terrain ranges from gently sloping piedmont to rugged foothills. The local forests comprised mostly of mixed hardwoods interspersed with planted pine.

Recreation - This huge reservoir offers a multitude of water and land based recreation activities. Many of the activities are based at the state parks which adjoin the lake. The most popular activities include camping, boating, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. The recommended season for outdoor activities at Lake Hartwell is April through October. Location -
Hartwell Lake is located in the Upstate Region of South Carolina, along the South Carolina - Georgia border, near Anderson, South Carolina. The Natural Resource Management Center is located 5 miles N of Hartwell, Georgia, on US 29, or 100 miles east of Atlanta on 1-85.
Several lake access areas are easily reached from the Hartwell, Anderson, or Clemson exits on 1-85.
