Description
- Laura S. Walker State Park is one of the few state parks named after a woman, and its name is richly deserved. Laura Walker was a Georgia writer, teacher, civic leader and naturalist who was a great lover of trees and worked for their preservation. Located near the Okefenokee Swamp, this 626 acre park is home to many fascinating creatures and plants, including alligators. Walking along the lake shore and nature trail, visitors may see carnivorous pitcher plants, the shy gopher tortoise, numerous oak varieties, saw palmettos, yellow shafted flickers, warblers, owls and great blue herons. Visitors will find 44 tent, trailer and RV campsites, a group camp, a pioneer group camp, nine picnic shelters, and four group shelters. There is also a 120 acre lake, a pool and a nature trail for visitors to enjoy. A championship 18-hole golf course and pro shop are the most recent additions to the park.
Recreation - Laura S. Walker State Park offers many outdoor activities including camping and picnicking. Visitors can golf at the championship 18-hole golf course and view plenty of wildlife walking along the lake shore and nature trail. The 120 acre lake offers water-skiing, fishing and boating with access to docks, ramps and canoe rentals. Climate - Georgia has a warm climate, especially in the southern regions of the state. Expect high temperatures and humidity levels during spring and summer months. The area can offer a relatively warm escape for snow-free outdoor recreation during the winter months. Location -
Laura S. Walker State Park is located north of the Okefenokee Swamp in the Coastal Region of southeastern Georgia. The park is found nine miles southeast of Waycross on Georgia Route 177.
