Description
- Ocmulgee National Monument, located in Central Georgia adjacent to the City of Macon, features 12,000 years of Southeastern culture from Ice Age Indians to the historic Creek Confederacy are preserved here. The park also includes the massive temple mounds of a Mississippian Indian ceremonial complex that thrived between AD 900 and 1100 and many artifacts.
Recreation - Recommended activities include sightseeing, hiking, and picnicking. Climate - Summers are hot and humid while winters are generally mild. Spring and fall are the best seasons to tour the park on foot. Trails connect most features. If the weather is hot or rainy, you may want to take Temple Mound Drive around to the large mounds. Ocmulgee National Monument is located in Central Georgia adjacent to the City of Macon, which is approximately 90 miles South of Atlanta via Interstate-75. The Monument is on the east side of Macon on US 80 east (Emery Highway). Main access is from Interstate 75 to Interstate 16 east, at the north end of Macon.
