What can I say? This is one of the most awesome California State Parks I have ever been to. I actually just got back from a Spring Break trip and the campground was PACKED!!! I would recommend making reservations months in advance, as this is a prime location. They are a large campground with over 200 sites where you can camp under redwoods or oak trees, and they have premium sites by the Big Sur River that will cost you more per night but are worth it. If you like hiking, the park as many trails ranging from 1/2 mile nature trail to 6+ miles with breathtaking views. Get in shape before you go though. And, ask the front gate how to get to Pfeiffer Beach. For $5 you can park and enjoy an awesome beach with cliffs, soft sand, and sand dunes with purple sand! By far, a great camping location.

We visited this campground in May 2003 and had a great time. We had been there once before, but hadn't really taken the time to explore. We managed to find Pfiefer Beach which, from the highway can be a little hard to spot the signs. From the north, before you reach the "Post Office" there is a small road that warns against large vehicles. It is narrow and winding and can be a little intimidating, but the beach at the end is worth it. It has probably the softest sand I've ever felt. A couple miles south of the campground is a tourist information center that I recommend for all first time visitors. We stopped in and asked about the best place to see the sunset. The ranger recommended a bluff that overlooks the area. He was right, it was spectacular.
The only dissapointment/frustration we had was that there had been some sort of problem with one of the restroom buildings. Not all of the restrooms have showers so when one with showers goes down, the other showers are packed. It was kind of a hassle to have to walk a ways down to the next shower, then have to wait in line for an hour. Hopefully that is fixed now. Hope you have as great a time as we did at this beautiful park.
