I spend a lot of time here, especially Goat Island between the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Three smaller islands on the far side of Goat Island called the Three Sister's Islands are my preferred place. Took my 18 years old daugher in December right after a good, wet snowfall. The trees are coverd in fluffy snow, and what didn't have snow on it had thick ice from the mist of the falls. We took over 100 pictures and each one is beautiful. It was cold, but the sun was shinning and the trees and water just glistened. I have gone up there several times over the years to take pictures and I can never get enough of it. Winter is one of the most beautiful times to visit the falls. Less people makes better, natural pictures. On the third island there are some good sized bolders that you can climb on and if you are really stupid, you can put your feet in the river just about 100 feet from the brink of the falls. No fences or railings to keep you away from the water. Also, explore some of the trails that lead into the woods, off the beaten path. You cross over some beautiful stone arched foot bridges to get to each island. We saw about 15 cardinals plus many other birds. You have to see it in the winter to really appreciate what the falls has to offer.
