A hidden gem - I cycled the park, which is an Island in the middle of the great St. Lawrence River, on a road bicycle. Starting at the info center, there is a paved road with a wide bike lane that goes for about 6 miles from the entrance of the park through a nature preserve, across a wide bridge with a view or a tall controll dam, to a dead end near a huge power dam. Unfortunatly since 911 you have to turn around without visiting the dam that connects the island to the mainland of Canada. There are two side roads to take on your return trip. One 2 mile road takes you to a large sand beach with lifequards, a changing area and a consession stand. Continuing on the road that took you to the beach, you can ride a short distance to a marina. There you will find that dramatic Controll dam up close. Returning to the main road there is another road to the right that takes you 2 miles a large camping area. There is a fantastic 35+ mph dip in the road that would never be built in todays more careful world. The camping area is right on the shore of the St. Lawrence River. Returning to the main road you go right past your car at the information center and ride about 3 miles. Alongside this road, that does not have a bike lane, you often see huge oceangoing ships in a canal to your right. There is a left turn to Hawkins Point which is full of fishermen and boaters. There is an overlook to the power dam where you can see and hear the power of the river. Returning to the main road you will find your car at the information center. The total ride is over 20 miles and traffic is seldom a problem. Remember that I said that this huge island is a nature preserve. If your ride ends near dusk you will be certain to see at least a dozen deer along the way. I got lucky and came eye to eye with wild turkeys, black squirlls, hawks, groundhogs and a coyote; bring a camera. Lodging, a shopping mall and restaurants are located in nearby Massena. In the other direction, an Indian Reservation has good gift shops and a nice Casino.
