One of my ancestors, Lawrence Hoots, served in the area of what is now Camp Croft during the Civil War and settled there after the war. He is reportly buried in the Barnett Family Cemetery, along with his wife, Lucy Barnett, and her father The Reverend Micajah Cicero Burnett. The cemetery is supposed to be located within the present park boundaries but we have been unable to locate it. If anyone has knowledge of it we would appreciate any information. Thanks, Rod Hoots

We camp and horseback ride there at least one or two times a year there. Everyone there has always been so nice. Alot of the campers know each other from coming there so frequent that it's just like one big happy family there! We enjoy going when the horse show is going on so when we get back from our ride, we can enjoy watching the show that evening. We have never felt insecure about leaving our horses at the barn because the Park Rangers are always going down there and the other horse people as well. Croft is close enough to many restaurants so we can leave and get us a bite to eat without having to worry about the horses. The trails are in pretty good shape most of the time except after a heavy rain which some could be washed out a bit. The campsites are very clean and level. The bathhouses are okay..they could be a little cleaner sometimes. We always look forward to our camping trips to Croft.

We enjoyed our trip to Croft very much! Even after a BIG rain, the trails were very easily traveled and they were very well marked. The bathrooms and shower were warm and clean! The camp sites were well maintained and easy to set up in. The stalls were very clean and tools for keeping them clean were easily accessible. The only complaint I had was the hoses at the wash pad for the horses had a hole in it and I got soaked trying to wash the sweat off my horse!! All and all I look forward to my next trip to ride at Croft!

We have been camping at Croft numerous times in the past but I will never go back! We (all 4 of us) were harrassed from the time we got there until we left by the young man that was a park attendant. We were there 3 days. First of all a party of 4 that was coming with us cancelled because the pool was closed! The horse trails were dangerously, I mean dangerously muddy and not any fun at all for riders or horses. The web site for state parks had incorrectly posted the prices as 10.50 nite for campsites, 5.00 for stalls. Come to find out it was actually 12.50 nite, 7.50 for horse stalls. The bathroom was nasty, lites were so dim you needed a flashlite in the daylite, water in the shower could not be cut off. The little followed us all over telling us not to ride this place or that. That we couldn't use the water faucets that are outside of the horse stalls, so we had to carry large buckets of water for the horses. I have arthritis in my hands so that was not very much fun. We changed stalls as it was horribly hot in the front ones we had chosen, having to set up 4 horses again was very time consuming. Before we could get back to clean the others out he came to find us fussing that we had not cleaned the stalls. We got over to clean the stalls and then they ran us down AGAIN telling us we were not supposed to change stalls, but that we had to strip the stalls. Well, we sifted through the manure and urine, leaving the good shavings, thinking that would be appropiate economically as we do our own barns at home. Wrong. We went back and stripped them. Then the guy comes to collect our money in the middle of a lightning storm, and we all got soaked including one of the girl's camper insides. Whew! What a miserable experience. I will never go back. If the attendant had spent HALF of the time he spent driving around watching us, making the repairs that needed to be done in the park, as he should have been doing, the park would be in great shape. The trails should never have been open to horseback riding. They were dangerous. THe other state parks are great, esp Lee State Park, Bishopville SC as are the rangers there as well!! Try it!
