While visitng my parents, who live a short five minute bike ride away, I hopped on my bike and spent three serenely peacful hours exploring every nook and cranny of this lushly georgeous park. I visited on Wed. August 4, 2004 around 2pm and surprisingly, I only saw two other people on my visit: one was the exceptionally helpful gate attendant who gave me some tips on the best bike paths to try and the other was a maintenance man pruning a tree who cheerfully said hello to me. Outside of that I felt like I was the only person on earth. I rode along all the paved paths first and then ventured off onto the dirt bike paths which had some exciting views not available on the paved paths. The Lagare Mansion that looked out onto tree lined "avenue" is breathtaking classic Southern charm and beauty. Although the Mansion, along with the Animal Forest, were both closed the day I visited I still saw plenty of wildlife. Butterflies, dragonflies, squirrels, graceful egrets, and a family of racoons who were startled by my squeaky brakes. I was a bit aprehensive about the alligator warnings in the lagoon area although I didn't see any. I did see several black "splotches" slowly moving across the surface of the water so it was safe to assume those were alligator heads keeping an eye on me. The toughest part was leaving the park and ther greatest reward was the peace and quiet, the feeling of truly being in the South and the breathtaking views of the swamps and marshes. A gorgeous gem of a park unassumingly tucked away in a suburban area. I will definitely visit again on my next trip to Charleston.
