Lake Somerville State Park is no rugged desolate
wilderness, but I think it's about as close as you can
get to that in this part of the southern praries and
lakes region of Texas. The lake isn't as serene as
say Canyon Lake in the Hill Country (I mean, as far
as the color of the water), and the terrain is mildly
undulating at best. But, hey, if you are into birding,
this is supposedly a hotspot, and those who enjoy
walking will find a 13 mile trail here which I have
yet to undertake, unfortunately. The wooded
landscape surrounding the lake makes for a rather
tranquil setting, and recreational amenities like
camping and boating are pretty abundant.
