General Information

Fun on the beach at Carpinteria SB

Fun on the beach at Carpinteria SB

Description - Twelve miles south of Santa Barbara. The Spanish named the area Carpinteria because the Chumash tribe, which lived in the area, had a large seagoing canoe-building enterprise, or "carpentry shop" there.

Attractions - Twelve miles south of Santa Barbara. The Spanish named the area Carpinteria because the Chumash tribe, which lived in the area, had a large seagoing canoe-building enterprise, or "carpentry shop" there. The tribe had chosen the location because of naturally occurring surface tar which was used to seal the boats. Seals and sea lions can be seen in the area December through May, as well as an occasional gray whale. Tidepools contain starfish, sea anemones, crabs, snails, octopi and sea urchins.

Recreation - Carpinteria State Beach offers a mile of beach for swimming, surf fishing, tidepool exploring and camping.

Climate - Climate in the Central Coast varies greatly with elevation and the amount of coastal influence. Areas with more coastal influence experience moderate temperatures year round with fog likely from June through mid-August. Plan your coastal visit in the late summer or fall to ensure the best conditions for viewing the scenery. Also, occasional clear days between winter and spring storms are incomparable. Areas further inland experience greater temperature extremes, with relatively cooler winters and hot summers. Inland areas often receive frost on winter nights. As throughout most of California most of the precipitation comes in the winter months, with April through October normally very dry.

Location - The park is on Highway 224, off U.S. 101, twelve miles south of Santa Barbara.

Report: This is a wonderful campground and I have gone here for years, however on my last visit I was a little upset that they let RV's in with the tent campers even when they have thier own designated area. Me and my family did not enjoy the sound of thier LOUD generators. We could barley hear our selves speak. It was very dissapointing. Other than that its a wonderful place and the sites right on the beach are awsome !

Report: Toughest part of this camp is the camp hosts. They take pride in enforcing those rules that are usually ignored such as minor parking violations or helmet use with bicycling. Otherwise, it's alot of fun. Make sure you go to the beach after dark and see the waves glow green with luminescent organisms.

Report: Outstanding campground, great little town to bicycle around in, nice beach. Be aware they are closed for remodeling until April 2002. Don't know if this affects day use or not, but the campground is closed.
