General Information

Attractions - Located on Monterey Bay, the mile-long beach features a bird sanctuary in a lagoon just before the Carmel River empties into the sea. Carmel River State Beach features a wide variety of waterfowl and song birds.

Recreation - Monastery Beach, also known as San Jose Creek Beach, is part of the park and is popular with scuba divers. Swimming and wading are extremely dangerous at this location.

Climate - Climate in the Central Coast varies greatly with elevation and the amount of coastal influence. Areas with more coastal influence experience moderate temperatures year round with fog likely from June through mid-August. Plan your coastal visit in the late summer or fall to ensure the best conditions for viewing the scenery. Also, occasional clear days between winter and spring storms are incomparable. Areas further inland experience greater temperature extremes, with relatively cooler winters and hot summers. Inland areas often receive frost on winter nights. As throughout most of California most of the precipitation comes in the winter months, with April through October normally very dry.

Location - The park is located off of Highway One in Carmel. Travel one mile south of Ocean Avenue, then turn right on Rio Road, continue toward the Carmel Mission and finally turn left on Carmelo Street to the parking lot.
