Description - Kiptopeke is one of the United States' most important bird population study areas. It is located along Virginia's eastern shore, which is a major flyway for neotropical songbirds and raptors.

Attractions - Kiptopeke is a peaceful and quiet park that provides camping with electric, water and cable hookups. In addition, it has modern bathhouses with washer and dryer. The park has hiking and biking trails with access to Chesapeake Bay beaches. The swimming beach is very popular Memorial Day to Labor Day. On the site of the Old Kiptopeke Ferry is a newly renovated fishing pier and boat launch providing access to some of the best sport fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. The Kiptopeke Harbor is ringed with sunken W.W.II concrete transport ships.

Recreation - Camping, swimming, pier fishing and bike riding are enjoyed at Kiptopeke State Park.

The Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory volunteers capture, examine, weigh, band and release resident and migratory birds in September and October of each year. In the raptor research area, hawks, kestrels, osprey and other birds of prey are observed and banded from September through November. Each fall the park hosts activities associated with the Kiptopeke Birding Festival.

Climate - Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The eastern portion of the state has winter temperatures averaging above 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The eastern portion of Virginia generally experiences temperatures above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.

Location - This lovely park is located on Rt. 13 on the eastern shore just three miles from the northern terminus of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
