Charles Towne Landing State Park

Description - One of historic Charleston's many unique points of interest, this
park is the site of the first English Settlement (1670) in South
Carolina. The park, a nature preserve and historic site, brings to
life the experience of those first settlers. Charles Towne Landing
interprets the first years of the colony with hands-on activities.
The full scale reproduction 17th century trading vessel
"Adventure" emphasizes the important role trade played in the
development of the colony. Other special features of the park
include a natural habitat zoo, the 1670 Experimental Crop
Garden and 80 acres of English Park Gardens. The site is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places. View animals
native to South Carolina in 1670 in the Natural Habitat Zoo -
puma, bison, alligator, black bear, wolves and more. Other
amenities include nature and walking trails, bike trails (bike
rentals available), gift shop, snack bar, picnic areas, playground
equipment, and tram tours. Also available are wheelchair and
stroller rentals. Meeting facilities include: a geodesic dome,
meeting room, and a theater.
Attractions
- The sailing vessel Adventure is
currently undergoing restorations at Charles Towne Landing.
Come and experience the excitement as a 17th-century tall ship
is revitalized.
Trails and Gardens – Seven miles of trails for
hiking and biking lace the site. Also here are 80 acres of
gardens, including an Experimental Crop Garden showcasing
some of the crops the settlers tried to grow here such as indigo,
rice, sugar cane, cotton. Bikes are available for rent.
Animal Forest – Pumas and otters and bison are a
few of the animals you’ll see at this 22-acre zoo. The animals
here are ones that would have inhabited the area when the first
settlers arrived.
Recreation - Activities at this park include walking and biking the trails, viewing the historic sites, visiting the natural habitat zoo, and picnicking. Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season. Location -
