General Information

Description - Lake Colorado City State Park is a 500-acre park, leased for 99 years from a utility company in MitchellCounty, southwest of Colorado City. It was acquired in 1971 and was opened in 1972.

Lake Colorado City was built in 1949 on Morgan Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River, by Texas Electric Service Company to provide cooling water for the power plant, a water supply for Colorado City, and recreation. Morgan Creek Power Plant is the largest modern steam electric station in West Texas.

Attractions - Lake Colorado State Park offers visitors a wide diversity of attractions. The central focus to the area is the lake itself where users can participate in water based activites.

Some of the wildlife that can be observed and photographed includes white-tailed deer, mallard
duck, raccoon, armadillo, and squirrel. Popular fish are crappie, perch, catfish, bass, and red drum. The sandy soils around Lake Colorado City State Park near Colorado City will be filled with tall yellow evening primroses, white spectacle pod and yellow woollywhite in early May.

he park has recently opened mini-cabins (The Inside has at least 2 bunk beds to sleep 4 persons, a small refrigerator, microwave, air conditioning, heat, ceiling fans, and windows with shutters. The outside has a picnic table on a covered porch outside of the cabin. Also outside is a fire ring and a waist high grill for cooking. A maximum of 8 people are allowed at each mini-cabin.)

Other facilities include restrooms with showers; picnic tables with grills and drinking water; campsites with water; campsites (pull-through) with water and electricity; and trailer dump stations. There is a recreation hall (capacity 75) with a kitchen and a group picnic pavilion (capacity 40); a Texas State Park Store; one mile of hiking/nature trail; a four-lane, concrete boat ramp with easy access to and from the lake; plus a lighted pier.

Area Attractions: Lake Champion is a popular interest nearby on State Highway 208. Other areas of interest include the Heart of West Texas Museum, Heritage House, Ruddick Park, and numerous antique stores. Events of interest include the Annual 4th of July Fly-In; Annual Boer Goat Cook-Off; Annual St. Ann's Fall Festival; Railhead Arts and Crafts Weekend the third weekend each March, July, and November; Annual Bass Tournament; Annual Golf Tournament; Hunters Appreciation Banquet held opening weekend of hunting season; Annual Cowboy Breakfast and Old-Timers Reunion; High Plains Junior Rodeo, Parade, and Queen's Contest; and the Annual Courthouse Lighting and Parade which includes the Little Mr. and Ms. Merry Christmas contest.

Recreation - Activities include picnicking, camping, fishing, and lake swimming (unsupervised). Containing more than five miles of shoreline, the 500 acres of park land afford numerous outdoor activities for lake swimmers, fisherman, skiers, jet-skiers, campers, hikers, and naturalists. Park visitors of all ages enjoy seeing part of the Texas longhorn herd.

Climate - Located at an elevation of 2067 feet, the State Park has an average January temperature of 46.2 degrees. In July the average temperature is 95 degrees. Location - Lake Colorado State Park is situated within the Panhandle Plains area of Texas. The park is located about 11 miles southwest of Colorado City off Interstate 20 on FM 2836.
